![]() In the first letter, rather than offer any critique of Kappus’ poetry, Rilke immediately encourages his young correspondent to abandon all need for outside validation of his work and, instead, to look unto his own self for guidance: Three years after Rilke’s death, Kappus assembled and published the letters titled, Letters to a Young Poet ( Briefe an einen jungen Dichter) in 1929. Drawing on the contemporaneous theories of Sigmund Freud, his work often focuses on an individual’s yearning for communion with the innermost self, written at a time when mankind was plagued with nihilistic and chaotic interpretations of the world.Īnd thus, his correspondence with Kappus, one that lasted between 19, would crystallize Rilke’s aesthetic and philosophical sensibilities over the course of ten letters, with advice ranging from loneliness, sexuality, Nature and the need to trust one’s own inner judgement. Rilke (4th December 1875–29th December 1926) was one of the most significant poets in the German language. He decided to send them to an alumnus of the academy, the Austrian poet, Rainer Maria Rilke. “When a truly great and unique spirit speaks,ĪT THE TURN of the last century, a 19-year-old student at the Military Academy of Vienna, named Franz Xaver Kappus, wanted career advice on his impending secondment to the armed forces, as well as a literary critique on a handful of poems he had recently composed. ![]()

This chapter brings to mind Billy Idol’s (who Duff refers to as a friend and mentor) bio that oozed with enthusiasm about music. There are some obvious music choices for a punk rock bassist who grew up in the ’70s – Aerosmith, The Beatles, Black Sabbath – but then there’s ABBA, Bauhaus, David Bowie, PJ Harvey, Elton John, Etta James, and Kate Bush. In the chapter “Know Your Tunes” he lists 100 albums that he says are “critical to my being” and that every man should know. ![]() In How To Be A Man, McKagan strips down his experiences and offers quick, easy tips on how to be a better (hu)man, starting with music. His latest book, How To Be a Man, is a humorous, well-written account of a man who has turned his vices into life hacks for a healthy, productive journey. His last book It’s So Easy (And Other Lies) was the first rock bio that made me both laugh, cry, then want to conquer the world. You’d hardly expect Duff McKagan from the ’80s hard rock band Guns N’ Roses to have become such an inspiration, but every time I finish one of his books I feel energized. ![]() ![]() I think they all have more stories to tell, too! The friendships came across as very real and believable, and I certainly hope these characters might be revisited at some stage as they're likeable, funny, supportive and interesting. My favourite part of the story has to be the friendship element though. I also really enjoyed all the historical aspects that the author added about the city. I loved the setting of the haunted house (the cemetery scenes were super spooky too!), and all the details of Chicago that were interwoven in. This ghost story is just the right amount of creepy for my liking, and seems perfect for the middle-grade audience. ![]() Happily, I was definitely not disappointed when I finally got to read it from cover to cover. ![]() I heard about this book on Twitter many months ago and had been counting down to reading it.
